Perhaps the telepathic autists that are the current focus are trying to tell us something. Like maybe that community, and the requisite artificial social constructs that accompany it, are what's holding us back. If someone was to do brain scans on these individuals I would bet that the areas of their brains associated with social functions are barely active. (Any takers?)

Maybe community was once necessary for survival but now it's bing used so much that it, and especially the social interactions it necessitates, have become toxic, inhibiting our evolution and our use of the innate powers we've been endowed with..

Think about it, you may notice them most when in a community setting but to find and refine them requires solitude, the removal of social pressures so the constant noise of social constructs like politeness and service and proper behavior don't crowd out the etheric signals that are always there but go unnoticed under the noise.
